SMSA Microphone Étiquette

This is an excerpt from  Deacon Ministry Overview document

The ultimate goal for SMSA hymn chanting is to have a choir that sings in unison without microphones (click for diocese message). A single microphone may be used at times to lead the choir and/or correct course.

We recognize that reaching this goal requires a significant and sustained investment in our learning as a team which is ongoing. So until that time comes, the following is the SMSA microphone usage etiquette:

  • There will be a single lead deacon scheduled for every service and will be in charge of the mic throughout

  • The lead deacon may delegate certain hymns/responses to other deacons

  • Multiple microphones can be used at the discretion of the lead deacon

  • Whenever there are multiple mics, all should chant in support of the lead mic and be prepared to yield to it. Support is following/matching, not leading. (note: lead deacons may suddenly adjust tempo or hymns for various reasons, primarily to keep the service on time) so be attentive and ready to match them.

  • Everyone singing on microphones is expected to follow closely the standard responses audio defined in our SMSA Deacons Hymns Library. (Practicing well to the standard audio and practicing together often will bring us closer to that unison choir goal)

  • SMSA rotates over the month between multiple lead deacons, each lead has a unique chanting style, pace, tone, range and experience, so expect slight differences and align with the lead for the day

IMPORTANT: If there's a moment of confusion during singing, yield to whoever is on the lead mic. and if you feel they are incorrect, do not attempt to correct or overpower them mid-singing unless they clearly signal for help. Make a note and bring errors to their attention offline so they can take corrective action for next time

Baptismal Setup & Use Instructions

The baptismal font is in the back of the sanctuary. It has an insert for infants which needs 2 adults to move into place. The font also has hot and cold water lines to it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: to avoid spillage, before filling please ensure the drain and the red valve are shut (see pictures below).

IMPORTANT NOTE: After baptism, confirm with Abouna first before draining, there are specific dismissal prayers required.

To drain, look for a separate hose and attach to the drainage pipe on the bottom and drain to the outside garden. Open the drain and gradually open the red valve to begin water flow. Once drained, shut the red valve and the drain to prepare it for next use and stow away the hose. Than you for your service

drain is pop up (push down on it to close and open)

Turn the red valve clockwise to shut, counter clockwise to open

blue valve (always leave open to avoid overuse damage)

please remember to shut red valve after draining to avoid future spills
