Interim Guidelines for Deacon Choir Organization and Chanting

****updated 6/26/2026 (pending Abouna’s review)****

Ultimate Goal of the Parish Choir

  • The ultimate goal of our parish is to cultivate a choir that chants together in one voice without over-reliance on audio amplification tools, in accordance with the diocesan vision.

  • A single microphone may still be used, when needed, to establish the chant or guide the choir.

Purpose of These Guidelines

  • We recognize that achieving this goal requires continued learning, practice, and coordination as a team.

  • Until then, these interim guidelines will help us maintain a unified and orderly choir during services.

Lead Deacon Assignment

  • There will be one lead deacon assigned for each service.

  • The lead deacon serves as Abouna’s delegate for coordinating the deacon choir and acts as the primary point of contact for assignments and service coordination.

Role and Responsibility of the Lead Deacon

  • The lead deacon’s primary responsibility is to organize and coordinate the choir in a way that best supports a reverent, timely, and unified service.

  • The lead deacon will normally use the primary microphone throughout the service.

Delegation of Hymns and Responses

  • The lead deacon may invite other deacons to lead specific hymns or responses.

  • The lead deacon is encouraged to foster a unified choir whenever practical.

Support Microphones

  • Additional support microphones may be used at the discretion of the lead deacon based on the needs of the service.

Unified Chanting with Multiple Microphones

  • When multiple microphones are in use, all supporting microphones are expected to follow the lead microphone.

  • Supporting means matching the lead in tempo, melody, and transitions rather than establishing an independent direction.

  • The lead deacon may occasionally adjust the pace, shorten a hymn, or transition unexpectedly to meet Abouna’s direction or practical needs of the service.

  • Those supporting on microphones should remain attentive and be prepared to follow these adjustments immediately.

Shared Chanting Standards

  • Unless otherwise directed by Abouna or lead deacon, those chanting on microphones should follow the CopticHymnsInEnglish recordings and the CopticReader text as our common reference.

  • Using shared references helps us learn together and move toward the goal of chanting with one unified voice.

Rotating Lead Deacons

  • Our parish rotates among several lead deacons. Each has a unique voice, range, tempo, and style of leading so minor differences are expected.

  • On any given day, the role of the choir is to support and align with the assigned lead deacon for that service.

Handling Uncertainty or Disagreement During Chanting

  • If uncertainty or disagreement arises during a hymn, all microphones should continue following the lead microphone.

  • Even if a supporting deacon believes the lead has made an error, he should avoid correcting or competing with the lead during the service unless the lead clearly requests assistance or there is an obvious need recognized by both Abouna and the lead deacon.

  • A brief moment of imperfect chanting is generally less disruptive than multiple microphones pulling the congregation in different directions.

  • Any concerns or corrections should be shared respectfully with the lead deacon after the service so they can be considered for future services.

Final Principle

  • These guidelines are intended to promote unity and order and are always subject to the direction of Abouna.

Baptismal Setup & Use Instructions

(instructions as of late 2025, check with Abouna for latest)

The baptismal font is in the back of the sanctuary. It has an insert for infants which needs 2 adults to move into place. The font also has hot and cold water lines to it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: to avoid spillage, before filling please ensure the drain and the red valve are shut (see pictures below).

IMPORTANT NOTE: After baptism, confirm with Abouna first before draining, there are specific dismissal prayers required.

To drain, look for a separate hose and attach to the drainage pipe on the bottom and drain to the outside garden. Open the drain and gradually open the red valve to begin water flow. Once drained, shut the red valve and the drain to prepare it for next use and stow away the hose. Than you for your service

drain is pop up (push down on it to close and open)

Turn the red valve clockwise to shut, counter clockwise to open

blue valve (always leave open to avoid overuse damage)

please remember to shut red valve after draining to avoid future spills
